The weather in Edmonton has been absolutely glorious over the last couple of days! It was so great that I could have been the wedding photographer at an outdoor wedding in a sweater with no gloves. Josh Clausen from Edmonton's CTV tells me that we were .4 degrees away from a warm weather record. If yesterday had been that much warmer, we would have had 6 days of weather warmer than 5 degrees, in January!
I am from Newfoundland and I always am grateful of the blue skies we get here in Edmonton (it makes photographing weddings and portraits a little less nerve wracking when you can, for the most part count on the weather!). This past week really has been something else!
When I walked outside this morning with no socks on in my leather shoes, I knew our little warm streak was over. There was Jack Frost, nipping at my toes, wearing his -18 jersey again.
I was really looking forward to doing some portraits of Kelly and her boyfriend on a nice warm day. They will go ahead of course, but it will be quite a bit cooler! The forecast? -20 degrees.
Now all day (or maybe on 3 or 4 occasions) I have been trying to come up with an upside for this renewed dip in the mercury and I finally have it!
The Polar Bears! It hit me when I was watching Baby Einstein with Bridget and they showed all of the snow with my favorite animals standing on it.
I had an epiphany (it may have been more of a revelation, but it was definitely stronger than a realization)!
So I concluded that if it continued to be as warm as it was, then 1 of 2 things was true. Either all of this balmy (or slightly above freezing) weather was melting the ice flows and making life difficult for my beloved white bruin, or David Suzuki (my favorite television scientist) is right. We have made a mess of the planet.
So it's cold outside and I will have to wear socks for the next couple of months. Please God it only means that at some point in my life I will have the opportunity to photograph these beautiful creatures, and not just in the zoo.
